Ghost Controls uses a fairly specific post bracket pattern with slotted holes that allow for adjustment during install. The aftermarket options you’ll find online are hit or miss. Some are cast instead of steel plate, which means they snap instead of bend. For Ghost Controls specifically, we prefer to either source the OEM bracket or fabricate one from plate steel that matches the hole spacing exactly. Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags noticeably at the latch end. This usually means a hinge weld has cracked or the post has rotated slightly. The gate’s own weight is doing the damage, and the opener is compensating until it burns out.
- The opener arm scrapes against the gate frame. When a mounting plate shifts, the arm walks out of alignment and starts rubbing. That grinding sound is metal on metal, and it gets worse fast.

DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely do the inspection yourself. Look at every hinge, bracket, and weld where the arm meets the gate. Look for rust blooming out of seams, cracks in the plate, and any bolt that’s backed out. What you shouldn’t do is try to weld a cracked bracket or re-set a gate hinge post on your own. A gate weighs hundreds of pounds, and when a post lets go under that load, it doesn’t go slowly. The dangerous part isn’t just the voltage in the opener, it’s the stored weight of the gate itself.

Near the coast we see brackets and hinge welds start to fail between 5 and 10 years, faster if the gate is heavy or chained. The salt air attacks the welds and hinge points more aggressively than the flat steel, because that’s where the finish gets burned off during fabrication. Inland a few miles, the same parts often last two or three times as long. If you’re within a mile of Pacific Coast Highway, plan to inspect your gate hardware once a year.
In most cases a crack in a Ghost Controls mounting bracket means replacement, not repair. Welding over a crack in a stress point just moves that stress to the next weak spot. But a cracked weld on a hinge or post where the gate itself is still solid can usually be ground out and re-welded properly.
